A journalist has told Cody Gakpo to learn from the experience of Manchester United hero Ruud van Nistelrooy, amid the 22-year-old’s links with Liverpool and Arsenal.
Gakpo, who can play as a winger on either flank or as a centre-forward, hit 11 goals in 29 matches last season. And he has been in even better form this term, registering 18 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
He bagged the winner during PSV’s Dutch cup final against Ajax, while his impressive form is also helping the club challenge for the Eredivisie title.
Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Gakpo and his agent over a potential switch to Anfield this summer.
Arsenal are in the transfer race too, and the Gunners were recently given a major boost. Gakpo said he likes the team ‘a lot’ and that he ‘looked up to’ Thierry Henry.
The Netherlands international seemingly has the ability to cut it in one of Europe’s top five leagues. And he is most likely to end up in England ahead of next season.
However, Dutch journalist Marco Timmer reckons Gakpo needs to stay fit and increase his impact in big games if he is to shine away from PSV.
“The footballer has missed too many matches in the past two seasons due to injuries,” Timmer said (via Sport Witness).
Cody Gakpo told where to improve
“And although he is PSV’s best player, the captain was not always there in the big games. He was in the cup final against Ajax, but for example not against Leicester City twice.”
Timmer thinks Gakpo should follow in van Nistelrooy’s footsteps, too. The striker had been in line to join United back in 2000, only for the transfer to be pushed back by a year.
This extra season, in which he recovered from injury and gained more experience at PSV, was important in helping the striker succeed at Old Trafford.
Another factor for Gakpo to consider is van Nistelrooy becoming PSV’s manager for the 2022-23 campaign. He could become an even better forward under the coach’s guidance, before moving to England in 2023.
“In van Nistelrooy, Gakpo has the perfect example and an excellent experience expert,” Timmer added. “The student better listen to the master.”
