Aston Villa boss has a huge problem to solve with struggling star Emiliano Buendia after one observer accussed the summer signing of “going missing”.
The Argentine star moved to Villa Park over the summer in a club-record £33m deal. Indeed, his signing was a pre-cursor for Jack Grealish’s British record move to Manchester City. However, Buendia has failed to find the consistency expected of him so far, having made something of an indifferent start.
Buendia has one goal and three assists from 18 outings so far – his latest coming when he teed up Danny Ings to open the scoring at Brentford.
However, stats show that Buendia lost more duels (11) and more possession (three) than any other display during the game.
And that reflects a topsy-turvy start for the former Norwich man since moving to the Midlands.
Now, pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor reckons Gerrard has a huge problem to fix in getting the best out of Buendia.
“The turn from Buendia was a bit of class as well so that’s better for him,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“The movement from Ings, ready to run in behind and taking the shot early, that’s what he’s done his whole career. That will give him the confidence to get back to scoring. It was a pleasure to see.
Buendia goes quiet
“But then Buendia goes quiet after 55 minutes. You want to see him for 90 minutes. Can a player be in a game for 90 minutes? With Buendia, you never see him in a game for 90 minutes. He goes missing.
“Steven Gerrard will want to get more out of him. Yes, you got a great assist but can you go and get a goal? Can you go and get another assist? Can you be in a game for more than 50 minutes? That’s what he’s got to do next.
“I still want more. I can see how talented he is but I want to see more. I’m sure the manager will too.”
Wesley reaches exit agreement
Meanwhile, Aston Villa striker Wesley is closing on a return to his homeland with Internacional.
The one-time Brazil international joined Aston Villa from Club Brugge back in July 2019. They put their faith in him by parting with £22.5million to secure his signature.
Wesley enjoyed a bright start in the Premier League, notching four goals in his first eight appearances under then manager Dean Smith.
But the attacker’s campaign was ended early by an ACL injury against Burnley. He has barely been in the first team since, spending the first half of the current campaign back on loan at Brugge.
Wesley looks set for another temporary spell away from Aston Villa as Gerrard has no need for him.
Sport Witness, who cite Brazilian journalist JB Filho, claim Wesley has agreed terms to join Internacional.
He will move back to Brazil on a one-year loan in an attempt to regain his confidence.
According to the report, the transfer will be made official once documents have been shared between Villa and Internacional.
As the club cannot afford his wages, which stand at £35,000 per week, Villa will pay the majority. This shows their desperation in wanting Wesley to get regular game time.
The player recently spoke about his impending transfer. He told Globo Esporte: “I hope to live up to what I can give. If I confirm my move to Internacional, the chances of playing in the World Cup are great, a dream of every athlete.”
