Newcastle have announced the signing of England international Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.
The deal is worth £15million, according to the Daily Mail, which includes an initial £12m and a further £3m in add-ons. Trippier has penned a contract at St James’ Park lasting until June 2024.
31-year-old Trippier becomes the first new arrival since the club’s Saudi Arabian-led takeover in October. He is set to become the highest earner on Tyneside, ahead of record signing Joelinton and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
The fee is some way off the £25m Atletico were gunning for in the summer, when Manchester United also held an interest.
But with Trippier’s contract in Madrid set to expire in 2023, this was one of Atletico’s last opportunities to get a decent sum.
Trippier told Newcastle’s official website: “I’m delighted to be joining this fantastic club. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be.
“I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started and I’m excited to step out at St. James’ Park as a Newcastle player.”
Welcome aboard, @trippier2!

He may not be the only addition to the Newcastle defence as the Magpies are also eyeing at least one centre-back.
Newcastle ‘very serious’ about Liverpool target
Meanwhile, Italian source Inter Live claim Newcastle are challenging Liverpool and Bayern for Matthias Ginter.
The Gladbach centre-half will move on in the summer after running down his contract.
“I have decided to follow another path in my career,” Ginter said in December.
Bayern’s status, as well as their pull for German players, puts them in pole position to land the 27-year-old.
But the Magpies are ‘very serious’ about signing him and could offer contract terms over the next few months.
