Wolves manager Bruno Lage has cheekily suggested Cristiano Ronaldo can come and play for him at Molineux amid claims the Portuguese superstar is unhappy with life at Manchester United.
Ronaldo has cut a frustrated figure at United in recent weeks. He was back on the scoresheet on Thursday night as Burnley were beaten 3-1, taking his tally to 14 goals for the Red Devils since his summer return. However, it’s not all been a bed of roses for the Portuguese superstar.
Amid criticisms of being a “whingebag”, his actions during certain games have led to strong criticism from some of the game’s big-name pundits.
And as a result, a mischievous report in Spain claimed Barcelona were exploring the possibility of a January deal for Ronaldo.
While that has since been denied by his agent, talk of Ronaldo’s unrest refuses to go away.
Indeed, in a new year message on his Instagram page, Ronaldo spoke of his frustration at United’s form.
“I’m not happy with what we are achieving in Man Utd. None of us are happy, I’m sure of that. We know that we have to work harder, play better and deliver way more than we are delivering right now.
“Let’s make this New Year’s Eve a turning point of the season! We can embrace 2022 with a higher spirit and a stronger mentality.
“Let’s take us above and beyond, let’s reach for the stars and put this club right where it belongs! Join us, we’re counting on all of you!
“Happy New Year and see you soon!”
Lage offer to Cristiano Ronaldo
And, in a tongue-in-cheek bid to lure him to Molineux, Wolves boss Lage has opened the door on a possible move.
“He’s a machine,” said the Wolves manager. “Cristiano Ronaldo just wants to score and score and score. He lives for that. He’s a massive player and every team in the world would want him.
“It’s football and everyone has an opinion. But if United aren’t happy with him then I have a place for him here, but I know they are happy with him.
“He started playing at the top level very young and he’s just continued at the same level.”
Manchester United will, of course, not even consider for a second the departure of the talismanic forward next month.
Their attack though could soon be two bodies lighter with speculation continuing over Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani.
And the most likely departure will be Martial, with United willing to let the France forward depart this month.
Rangnick knows Martial sale must be right
He’s been the subject of interest from Sevilla, though their opening offer was quickly rebuffed by United.
“He explained to me he’s been at Man Utd now for the last seven years. He feels it’s the right time for a change, to go somewhere else,” revealed interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
“I think in a way this is understandable, I could follow his thoughts. But on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club.
“We have Covid times, we have three competitions in which we still have high ambitions. We want to be as successful as we can be.
“I told him ‘listen, as long as there is no club showing interest in him [he will stay]’. It should not only be in the interest of the player it should also be in the interest of the club.”
