Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has sent a dig to Manchester United after foiling their plan to deliver a crushing blow to the Reds’ top-four hopes.
After Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal, Jurgen Klopp’s men put the top-four race in their hands with a barnstorming 4-2 victory at Old Trafford. United took the lead, but Salah, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota helped the Reds win. As such, they have closed the gap to Chelsea and Leicester.
Crucially, though, neither side can get their maximum points for the season; they face off on Tuesday, four days after their FA Cup final meeting.
Therefore, Liverpool could potentially move into fourth if they win their final three games.
However, all of that would have mattered much less if they had not picked up points against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
United played a strong team after making 10 changes for their defeat to Leicester, but Harry Maguire’s continued absence cost them.
Salah said: “I wasn’t surprised of United players’ intensity in the game,” the Egyptian told beIN Sports.
“They rested most of their players the last game to play this one and keep us out of top 4 places but this motivated us to win.”
Salah has now scored four goals in four games against United, after struggling to affect his previous matches with the Red Devils.
The first and last in that sequence went in in very similar ways, both coming from counter-attacks at the death.
Nevertheless, Salah’s latest contribution put the game to bed and he hopes to pile more misery on Liverpool‘s rivals in the future.
Salah wants more goals against Man Utd
“I hope [today’s goal] is a sign to continue scoring regularly against United,” he said.
“I was unlucky, but the most important thing that we won.”
Liverpool’s next task sees them face relegated West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Their previous meeting saw the sides draw 1-1, which marked the beginning of the Reds’ sharp downturn in form.
