Mixed contract fortunes for Newcastle duo as clubs wait to pounce Reports claim Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez is being monitored by at least two European clubs ahead of his expected exit this summer. The 32-year-old will fall out of contract at the end of the season and, as such, is free to talk to foreign clubs. While not naming those involved, the Northern Echo suggests there is ‘strong interest’ from the continent. The former Argentina international moved to St James’ Park from Swansea in the summer of 2019. He penned a two-year deal on Tyneside and extended that by a further 12 months last summer. The South American has made 20 Premier League starts for the Magpies in 2020-2021. And, with four games to go, they are virtually assured of plying their trade in England’s top division next term. But it is unlikely that Fernandez will still be at the club due to owner Mike Ashley’s policy on aging players. He does not like to hand out new deals to those over the age of 30, meaning time is up for the former Napoli stopper. It was reported back in April that the centre-back was set to be offered fresh terms as Steve Bruce is a fan. However, nothing has materialised and it appears as though his days at the club are now numbered. Fernandez has enjoyed 71 top-flight outings for the men in black and white and 78 in all competitions. He has missed many games this season due to injury but, when fit, can still do a decent job at the heart of the rearguard. Schar likely to net new deal While Fernandez looks certain to leave, fellow centre-half Fabian Schar has been tipped to land a new deal. The Switzerland international penned a three-year contract with the north-east outfit in 2018. That also runs out next month but, at 29, he just makes the cut. The former Basel ace has a clause in his contract allowing for another year if all parties agree. And, reports claim Bruce wants to get things sorted before he heads off to the delayed European Championship. Schar has made only 17 appearances this term due to injury but returned to face Arsenal on Sunday. However it was not a happy comeback as he was sent off in the 90th minute as the Gunners won 2-0. But he has enjoyed 73 outings in all competitions and may well increase that number in 2021-22. Reports claim Newcastle United defender Federico Fernandez is being monitored by at least two European clubs ahead of his expected exit this summer.

Schar likely to net new deal

While Fernandez looks certain to leave, fellow centre-half Fabian Schar has been tipped to land a new deal.
