Leeds United have made it a priority this summer to sign a new defensive midfielder to support Kalvin Phillips, a report claims.
The 25-year-old has proved a fantastic influence ever since breaking into his boyhood club’s team, making 207 appearances so far. But while he impressed in the Championship, he has gone to the next level in the Premier League. Indeed, he has even emerged as a candidate to play for England at Euro 2020.
Phillips has put in several standout performances for Leeds this term, including by dispelling Bruno Fernandes’ threat in the recent 0-0 draw between the sides.
But in any case, Leeds miss his presence; they lost 2-0 to Brighton without him on Saturday, Robin Koch proving less effective when filling in.
Therefore, Football Insider reports that the Whites want to sign a player to support him next season.
Director of football Victor Orta has reportedly begun compiling a ‘shortlist’ of players with the pedigree and experience to provide cover and competition.
However, the report does not state any targets who are currently on the club chief’s radar.
What’s more, the report adds that Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, despite appearing happy with his alternatives, wants to add more mettle to the position.
Bielsa has enjoyed success with last summer’s signings. Indeed, winger Raphinha has proved a fantastic addition and, like Phillips, Leeds miss his presence.
The Whites are already gearing up for their summer plans, with a top-half Premier League finish in sight.
Bielsa, Leeds future still uncertain
Bielsa, who has signed one-year deals since his arrival at Elland Road, is widely expected to commit to another such extension.
But a sliver of doubt nevertheless remains and reports have claimed that Leeds are contacting other managers in case.
According to Sport Italia, Roma’s Paulo Fonseca is a man that the West Yorkshire club may turn to.
