Southampton are looking to make fresh enquiries over a loan deal for Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams, reports claim.
The 20-year-old burst onto the scene last season with 36 senior appearances in all competitions. Indeed, he featured in 17 Premier League games, notching one goal and one assist. This season, though, Luke Shaw’s return to form and Alex Telles’ October arrival have limited his chances.
Williams only made one top-flight appearance before the January transfer window began. What’s more, he came on late against Southampton, playing for six minutes.
As such, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints enquired about taking him on loan. However, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rejected the move through fear of a lack of options in the event of injury.
Nevertheless, Williams has only made one further Premier League cameo since then, playing a minute against Manchester City in March.
Therefore, The Sun reports that Southampton want to try to sign the full-back again in the upcoming window.
The south coast club feel ‘hopeful’ that Solskjaer has changed his mind amid the player’s constant lack of action.
As for Southampton‘s motivation for the deal, Hasenhuttl reportedly admires that Williams can play at either left-back or right-back.
Indeed, the Austrian manager wants further depth and versatility in his team.
Southampton could also see Ryan Bertrand walk away on a free transfer at the end of the season; the full-back’s contract runs out at the end of June but it remains unclear if he will renew.
Should the club’s raid for Williams fail, though, the Saints have eyes on Brentford star Rico Henry.
Solskjaer has hailed Williams, Man Utd connection
Speaking during the January transfer window, Solskjaer said of Williams amid the exit rumours: “They’re still part of the club, part of the squad, training well.
“No deal has been struck for any of the players yet going out – still a little period, of course.
“There’s been many clubs interested in our players, so let’s see what happens.
“For me, it’s also important to take our wishes and our plans into consideration but also the players of course. They are Man United people and players through and through.”
