Pep Guardiola sent reassurances to some of his fringe players after turning to them in Manchester City’s win over Leicester.
City took another huge step towards the Premier League title with their 2-0 win at Leicester. Their 15th consecutive away win in all competitions, they made light work of a tough opponent. Goals from Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus made the difference, but the scoreline could – and probably should – have been bigger.
It already seemed like a matter of when, not if, City would win the league this season. But now, that has moved a step closer; they need just four more wins to get their hands on the trophy.
Guardiola knows it is close, and with a big win against a tough team – who had beaten them in the reverse fixture – proving just how good they are, he was delighted with his players.
He told Sky Sports: “They are an incredible team. We suffered at home against them but we are more patient and it is a big step to winning the Premier League.
“You never know after an international break but I trust my players. The players don’t always believe me but I like every one of them. Today I trust some of my players who haven’t played for a while.
“When you are winning, winning, the guys who play know they have to play good to play again. There is good solidarity between the players.
“The Premier League is the nicest competition [to win]; it is 11 months and it is so tough. We are close. We need three more wins.”
Guardiola ‘delighted’ with Aguero
The game was City’s first since they announced Sergio Aguero would be leaving at the end of his contract this summer.
The club legend has struggled with injuries all season and showed some rustiness as he missed a couple of chances. But Guardiola remains optimistic City will get some more magical moments out of him.
He said: “Sergio Aguero is fine; his knee is perfect. He needs the rhythm of games but we need players fresh.
“I am delighted the way he trained this week, nothing is going to change. Maybe one day we will need the one goal to win something and he will be there.”
