Samuel Eto’o says that if Mohamed Salah is to leave Liverpool, he must do so with his family and current circumstances at the heart of his decision.
Salah arrived at Liverpool as largely an unknown quantity following his struggles at Chelsea. However, he quickly dismissed his critics with 44 goals in his first season at Anfield. Since then, he has plundered another 99 goals and won the Premier League’s Golden Boot twice in a row.
However, as time has gone on, speculation over his future has increased.
This season, he has himself entertained links with a move abroad, perhaps when his contract ends in 2023.
Indeed, he picked out Real Madrid, Barcelona and Spanish football in general as an ideal next destination.
Speaking to ON Time Sport, ex-Los Blancos man Eto’o advised Salah on his next steps.
“Players like Salah, [Sadio] Mane, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, [Riyad] Mahrez and Aboubakr Sane represent Africa in the best way in Europe,” Eto’o said.
“I think Salah has to make a decision that suits his circumstances and his family, whether it’s leaving Liverpool or staying at the club.”
Salah told Marca in March about a potential future switch to La Liga: “I hope to be able to play for many more years. Why not?
“No one knows what’s going to happen in the future, so… maybe one day, yes.”
Fresh reports from The Times claim that Liverpool have earmarked Salah as a priority player for new contract talks.
The 28-year-old, who turns 29 in June, will therefore be in his 30s by the time his current deal runs out.
However, Reds chiefs do not feel worried. While they want to come to an agreement, they know that they would get a profit on the £34million they paid Roma for his services in 2017.
Criticism of Liverpool star blasted
One Liverpool midfielder who is only just getting his Anfield career off the ground, however, is Thiago Alcantara.
The Spaniard immediately impressed after his September move from Bayern Munich. However, he encountered a knee injury in October which kept him out for over two months.
Since his return, his style of play has been criticised for stopping Liverpool getting into their full attacking flow.
According to goalkeeper Adrian, though, such talk is nonsense.
