Arsenal outcast in the dark over future and reveals ‘door open’ at loan club Konstantinos Mavropanos admits he has no idea about his long-term prospects at Arsenal and could remain at Stuttgart for another season. Mavropanos, 23, joined the Gunners from Greek club PAS Giannina in January 2018. He linked up with the club’s Under-23s but made his senior debut against Manchester United in April of that year. However, opportunities were few and far between and he joined FC Nurnberg for the second half of the 2019-2029 campaign. The Greek international enjoyed 11 starts in Bundesliga 2 before returning to the Emirates last summer. The Athens-born stopper penned a new deal with Arsenal in July 2020 before returning to Germany with a new club. He signed a season-long loan deal with Stuttgart and was given a chance at top-flight football. And Mavropanos has enjoyed 15 starts among 17 outings for Die Roten. He has been tipped to return and press his claims for a spot in the Arsenal first team. But all things appear to be on the table after a lack of communication with his parent club. “I can’t say that at the moment (if I will return to Arsenal),” he told Bild. “Things can change quickly in football. I still have two months here in Stuttgart and would like to end the season with the team as high up as possible. “The door at VfB is open for me [to stay another year] – that’s very good, but I can only think specifically about the future when we have talks with Arsenal for the new season.” Plans afoot for Mavropanos and co There will be many decisions for Gunners chief Mikel Arteta to make this summer. After a poor season, the north Londoners are expected to bring in new faces, with several players leaving. That could open the door for Mavropanos, especially if he keeps performing well in Germany. Arteta revealed that he is monitoring those out on loan but made no mention of the young defender. “We’re having meetings very often to assess what they’re doing and obviously, we’re getting all the information and watching their games because I want to keep a very close eye on what they’re doing,” he said. Arsenal do have options at centre-half, with Gabriel, Rob Holding and David Luiz. However, Brazilian Luiz is out of contract at the end of the season, and could be on his way. William Saliba is likely to return from his loan spell with Nice, however. That could further lessen Mavropanos’s chances of seeing any game time.
