However, Red Devils chiefs are aware that signing him this summer would cost over £100million. Amid the cost of the coronavirus pandemic, the Old Trafford club cannot afford such a move. They could therefore wait until next summer, when a release clause of €75million (£64million) will become active in his contract. The Dutchman only moved to Old Trafford from Ajax last summer, but has struggled to settle. He has started only two Premier League games this term and several pundits have criticised the £40million deal. Club chiefs are aware that they would face a loss on Van de Beek if they tried to sell him outright, with no clubs keen on paying that fee again given his current spell. Manchester United are willing to lose Donny van de Beek in a ‘creative’ plan to land Erling Haaland amid a struggle for finances, a report claims.

Haaland stormed onto the European scene at the start of last season and has since enjoyed a rollercoaster rise.

He has become arguably the world’s most coveted striker, with Premier League clubs showing interest.

Indeed, as well as United, Chelsea and Manchester City both reportedly want to sign the 20-year-old.

Previous reports from the Manchester Evening News have claimed that the Red Devils have made the Borussia Dortmund their top target for a new striker in the summer window.

90min backs that claim up, but goes one step further to say that Haaland is United’s overall priority.

Doing that, though, would risk the likes of Chelsea or City paying the extra before then.

Van de Beek could help Haaland deal

As such, 90min claims that United are considering using midfielder Van de Beek as a makeweight in a deal.

United have not only gone to Dortmund with the idea; they are willing to use Van de Beek in a host of deals, including for centre-back targets.

But they have spoken to Dortmund as a priority given their interest in Haaland and winger Jadon Sancho.

Van de Beek was again criticised for his performance in Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Leicester.
