Liverpool have reportedly jumped ahead of Inter Milan in the race to sign Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.
The 26-year-old is being viewed as a potential replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who looks likely to join Barcelona or PSG on a free transfer this summer.
Udinese are seemingly resigned to De Paul leaving the club and have slapped a €30million price tag on him.
But according to the Daily Mail, the Reds are set to test the Serie A club’s resolve with an offer of around £26m.
Earlier this month Udinese’s sporting director Pasquale Marino admitted that a sale was inevitable.
The Italian side have taken that stance, given the amount of interest in the player, who was also wanted by Leeds last summer.
“He has characteristics that many top clubs in Europe are missing,” Marino told Italian broadcaster Radio 24.
“I hope it doesn’t happen, but whoever signs him next summer will raise their team to a different level.”
De Paul himself has previously spoken on Udinese’s website about his uncertain future. He said: ”I don’t know when my last day here will be.
“I will give everything for Udinese until that moment. There were many rumours about my future in January. But I immediately met the director to tell him I wanted to go nowhere.
“I closed doors for everyone, my daughter was born here, and my son is going to be born here, he will be Friulano.”
De Paul signed for the Italian team from Valencia in 2016 and has since scored 30 goals in 168 games.
So far this season he has notched five times in 22 games, with Udinese currently 12th in Serie A.
Inter Milan have, since the winter window, emerged as the frontrunners to land the player. But it would appear that Jurgen Klopp’s men now hold that position ahead of an expected summer raid.

Liverpool told Thiago was not a good fit
Paul Scholes has revealed why he does not think midfielder Thiago Alcantara can be a success at Premier League champions Liverpool, with a move to Manchester United better suited.
The Reds landed the Spain international from Bayern Munich last summer, with Thiago expected to give Liverpool a new dimension.
However, a dramatic fall from grace has seen Jurgen Klopp’s men currently battling for a Champions League spot.
Injuries have played a major part in their slide, but Thiago hasn’t proved to be the signing Liverpool hoped for.
According to United legend Scholes, he believes the 29-year-old is the wrong player for Klopp’s system.
He told Premier League Productions: “The way Liverpool play with the three in midfield, I don’t think he has great legs about him, so that central role would suit him down to the ground.” Read more…
