Reports in Spain claim Leicester City have firmed up their interest in Marseille star Florian Thauvin by offering him a deal ahead of the expected summer rush.
Thauvin, 28, has long been on the Foxes’ radar. Back in October it was reported that they had made contact with the winger’s representatives about a summer deal.
And now it appears as though Brendan Rodgers has tried to jump the gun for the former Newcastle man. Estadio Deportivo (via Sport Witness) are reporting that Leicester’s is the ‘last known offer’ for the midfielder.
Thauvin will be out of contract in the summer. Marseille offered him new terms but he has dug in his heels and looks set to depart in the off-season.
Capped 20 times by France, the midfielder has played the majority of his professional football for L’OM. He joined them from Bastia in the summer of 2013 and made 81 appearances before moving to St James’ Park.
Things did not work out at Newcastle and he returned to Marseille for the second half of the 2015-2016 campaign. Having re-signed on a permanent basis, the man from Orleans has added another 192 appearances to his tally.
But it seems as though he will be off at the conclusion of 2020-2021.
Thauvin playing hardball over deal
Many clubs are thought to be interested in Thauvin and a free transfer will appeal. While no fee will be involved, the Frenchman is said to be demanding a hefty wage.
Estadio claim that agent Bruno Satin has set out the terms for any deal.
“Thauvin is asking for a net annual salary of between 4 and 4.5 million euros, and nobody wants to give it to him today,” they quote him as saying.
Leicester are thought to have offered the wide man a four-year deal worth €3.5m per season. That looks set to fall short of what he requires and a re-think might be necessary.
But the East Midlanders will need to act fast as other clubs are circling. Sevilla, Tottenham, Roma and Napoli have all been credited with an interest.
Thauvin holds all the aces in any deal, with free-agent status giving his agent considerable bargaining power. But, he will not want to price himself out of the market, with finances tight at many clubs due to the pandemic.
Marseille are enjoying a decent season in Ligue 1. They sit sixth in the standings and are challenging for the Europa League places. But even European football will not be enough to keep Thauvin at the club.
