Leicester are closing in on a deal to sign Celtic and former Paris Saint-Germain forward Odsonne Edouard, according to a report.
The Daily Mail reports that the Foxes believe they have won the race for the prolific striker.
Edouard, who moved to Celtic under now-Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers’ stewardship, has scored 20 goals this season.
Indeed, the past relationship between Rodgers and the striker has proved crucial, the newspaper adds.
Having seen the player up close, the manager believes that Edouard can be Jamie Vardy‘s long-term successor.
Vardy, 34, has a contract which expires in 2023. At the contrasting age of 23, though, Edouard presents a definitive look towards the future for the Midlands club.
The Daily Mail adds that Leicester will pay around £15million for the France Under-21 international.
However, that fee has come right down from £40million, the price which Celtic valued him at at one stage.
Several factors have played their part in the fee falling, including a sell-on clause in the deal that took Edouard from France to Scotland.
As such, the clause means that the French champions are owed 40 per cent of the fee.
What’s more, the striker will have only one year left on his contract this summer and has chosen to move on. Indeed, the newspaper adds that he has ‘indicated’ that he wants to move to Leicester.
Previous reports (via the Transfer Window Podcast) have claimed that Arsenal recently made a “solid enquiry” over the forward’s availability.
Celtic to ‘gamble’ on Edouard sale
However, the report adds that Celtic’s plan involved matching their modest fee with a ‘gamble’.
The Bhoys will reportedly try to recoup a larger sum by inserting a ‘sizeable’ sell-on clause of their own into Edouard’s Leicester contract.
Leicester’s head of recruitment will play a key role in negotiations with Celtic.
Lee Congerton worked in the same position north of the border and helped bring Edouard to Parkhead.
