West Ham’s forgotten defender Winston Reid is reportedly close to agreeing a move to Brentford on transfer deadline day.
The 32-year-old has now completed his journey back to full fitness after a nightmare few years. The New Zealand international has not kicked a ball for the Hammers since May 2018.
A serious knee injury saw him sidelined and then he struggled to regain his first-team place. A loan move to MLS side Sporting Kansas City last February helped his rehabilitation.
He made 12 appearances and had hoped to resume his West Ham career. However, the Auckland-born stopper has once again been surplus to requirements at the London Stadium.
Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna are first-choice centre-backs for David Moyes.
Brentford are enjoying an excellent season in the Championship. They sit third and are just two points behind second-placed Swansea with a game in hand.
Manager Thomas Frank needs a central defender following the injury to Pontus Jansson and Reid may fit the bill. Although he has been on the sidelines in recent years, the former FC Midtjylland man is vastly experienced.
He has made 222 appearances for the club after joining in August 2010. Football League World are suggesting he is open to joining the Bees but there is no mention of the type of deal.
It may be a loan with an option to buy.
Hammers defender a Reds target
While Reid looks to be on his way across London, Issa Diop seems to be on Liverpool’s radar. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had previously made a big play about not signing a new defender in January.
That was despite the injury problems surrounding Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. However, the German seems to have relented, with news that Preston’s Ben Davies could be on his way to Anfield.
And now the Athletic are reporting that Liverpool are also keen on Diop. The former France Under-21 defender has played only a peripheral role for West Ham this term.
He has made three starts among four Premier League outings and, like Reid, is down the pecking order. Diop made 65 top-flight starts in his first two years at the club after signing from Toulouse in June 2018.
The Merseysiders have until 11pm on Monday to get any deal done and it is unknown if Moyes would sanction the switch. With West Ham fifth and pushing for Europe, the Scot will not want to leave himself light if injuries strike.
