West Ham’s prospects of signing Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha have been boosted after an admission that he is now ‘open to new challenges’.
The Hammers were linked with a move for the 25-year-old in January. Reports claimed that West Ham had their eyes on two keepers playing in Rome.
The other was Roma’s Pau Lopez but that possibility ended before it begun. He recently regained his first-team place and made it clear he wanted to remain in the Italian capital.
Veteran Pepe Reina is currently keeping Strakosha out of Lazio’s first team. The former Liverpool shot-stopper is now 38 but has played 15 Serie A games to Strakosha’s six.
The 25-year-old had been a regular starter for the Biancocelesti, with more than 170 appearances. But a positive Covid-19 test and some injury problems have thwarted his progress this term.
It seems as though the Hammers are not the only club showing an interest. Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have also been linked.
He seems happy in the Eternal City but told Sky Germany that anything is possible.
“Rome is my second home, I feel comfortable in the city, but I’m always open to new challenges,” he said. “(Dortmund) are a great club, they have a very young and talented team and an incredible stadium. It could be a great step in my career.
“Who wouldn’t be interested in playing in such a club? The Bundesliga is an interesting league, with good teams. I’m relaxed and I still have enough time to think. I’m happy at Lazio, and I’m very grateful to them. I think the club is happy with me too.”
Il Messagero are suggesting that West Ham’s peripheral centre-back Fabian Balbuena would be offered as a makeweight.
Healthy competition for Pole
Lukasz Fabianski is currently David Moyes’ number one at the London Stadium. But he has yet to extend his deal in the East End and will fall out of contract in the summer.
News that West Ham might be targeting a new keeper might not go down too well. Darren Randolph is the Poland star’s back-up but, at 33, he is hardly one for the future.
Nathan Trott, 22, certainly is but Strakosha could be the man to help out before the Bermuda-born starlet is ready. He would not come cheap, however, with a price of £34m mooted for Moyes to get his man.
