West Brom have finally confirmed the deadline day signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal.
Maitland-Niles was looking for a short-term solution after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.
The versatile England international wants to keep his hopes alive of reaching Euro 2020, but knows he needs more regular gametime to do so.
Therefore, he was looking to leave on loan, and there were a number of interested parties.
West Brom were one of the first to come forward, but Arsenal reportedly had doubts about sending Maitland-Niles to a relegation battle. However, they have now been convinced otherwise.
Maitland-Niles has officially completed his move to West Brom until the end of the season. He becomes Sam Allardyce’s fifth signing of the January transfer window.
The Baggies have beaten the likes of Southampton and Leicester to the signing of the Arsenal academy graduate.
The 23-year-old has made 11 appearances in the Premier League so far this season, and will now look to add to them at the Hawthorns.
He remains under contract with Arsenal until 2023 and will be hoping for a longer-term solution back at his parent club. For now, though, he will get much-needed gametime at West Brom.
Arteta explains decision
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta explained to the club website why they had loaned Maitland-Niles out.
He said: “Ainsley is a very talented player and we are proud of his hard work and development with us.
“This decision to go on loan to West Bromwich Albion for the rest of this season is to support Ainsley and his growth further. He will be working at a very good club in the Premier League and we all wish him the best of luck during his time at the Hawthorns.”
