Tuchel jokes about ‘missed opportunity’ after shock Newcastle move probe Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has insisted that he was “never aware” of supposed interest in his services from Newcastle in 2015. The German did not have a job in the dugout at that time, after leaving Mainz in the summer of 2014. A year later, Newcastle were looking for a new manager after sacking interim boss John Carver. But Tuchel and Newcastle’s paths never crossed; the Magpies brought in Steve McLaren, while Tuchel replaced Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund. However, questions surfaced in the manager’s press conference on Friday about links to St James’ Park. Speaking to Sky Sports, though, Tuchel set the record straight. “I just heard it and it feels like a missed opportunity here because I never talked to any officials from Newcastle,” the 47-year-old said. “So maybe I should ask my lawyer if he missed some calls if he was on holiday or whatever. “I just heard this in the press conference. No, I was never aware that there might be a possibility.” Tuchel managed Dortmund until May 2017. In the summer of 2018, he moved across Europe to France and took the reigns at Paris Saint-Germain. However, he is now at Chelsea and has made a flying start, winning four of his first five games. What’s more, he remains unbeaten and his side have only conceded two goals. Asked how long he can keep his record up, Tuchel insisted that he feels “absolutely happy” at Stamford Bridge. Tuchel happy at Chelsea structure “I don’t know, I hope forever because I feel good,” he said. “I think you see this because the first days were amazing. We found a structure, a structure that suits me very, very well. “I feel absolutely comfortable from the first minute. The support from any level, from the kit guys, the physical department, the analysing team is immense and on the highest level. “We have a talented squad and I’m absolutely happy to have the chance to live my dream in this club. It absolutely feels like this in the moment. “I hope I can remember this feeling when things get more difficult, but I have the feeling that I’m more prepared for this because when things get difficult it’s part of the job.” Chelsea return to action on Monday when they face Steve Bruce’s Magpies in west London.
