Liverpool have been given a double boost in their hunt to sign Florian Neuhaus this summer, after their interest in the Borussia Monchengladbach star was confirmed by a trusted source.
The Premier League champions have suffered an alarming fall from grace this season. A run of two Premier League wins since Christmas has led some critics to suggest the squad needs refreshing.
While Jurgen Klopp appears to have ruled out wholesale changes, plans are afoot to bring in a few names.
And bolstering their midfield appears to be the top focus, amid reports three big names could be allowed to depart from their engine room.
Thiago Alcantara was supposed to do that this season, but has not lived up to expectations. And with Georginio Wijnaldum entering the final few months of his contract and Naby Keita also linked with an exit, Liverpool need reinforcements.
Neuhaus emerged as a potential target earlier this month. He has been a standout player for Monchengladbach over the past few seasons.
The German star is likely to move on to a bigger club in the summer. Indeed, earlier this week it was claimed that Liverpool, Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund are the three candidates to sign him.
Now BILD journalist Christian Falk has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the 23-year-old.
Furthermore, he claims Bayern and Dortmund are unlikely to enter the bidding. Furthermore – and most significantly – Falk claims that Neuhaus is keen on the move to Anfield.
“It’s true that they’ve been watching the player for a while,” Falk told BILD.
“The whole thing is not yet concrete according to our information. But it can, of course, become concrete, and he asks to play there.
“Neuhaus has an exit clause of €40million, which could be triggered in the summer. Dortmund has distanced itself after the [Marco] Rose transfer and will not take any player from its team.
“Bayern has to save money after the €42.5 million transfer of [Dayot] Upamecano. It is currently rather unlikely that they will put another 40 million on the table.
“That means it must be another league if Neuhaus wants to change, and there is the Premier League and Liverpool, of course.”

Liverpool also eyeing attacking signing
Midfield is not the only area Liverpool may be looking to strengthen for next season.
Their attackers have not been as prolific as usual this term, which has had an impact on their title defence. Next year, they may look to reinforce their frontline.
As such, one man Liverpool are considering is Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, who could be allowed to leave the Bernabeu this summer.
The winger arrived at Real Madrid with big potential in 2019, but is yet to really fulfil it.
This season, a combination of injuries and competition for places has restricted him to just four La Liga starts. Respectably, he has still managed to provide four assists.
However, Madrid would have been hoping to get more out of him. And with financial pressures, they may have a decision to make in the summer.
With that in mind, the report claims that Madrid could sell Rodrygo for a fee of around £50m. How much Liverpool would be willing to pay remains to be seen, but it is claimed that Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer.
