West Ham United’s pursuit of Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong has taken a knock with reports he will cost £25m in the summer.
The Hammers were linked with the 24-year-old during January’s transfer widow. The loss of Sebastien Haller to Ajex left David Moyes light in the attacking department.
Jesse Lingard arrived on loan from Manchester United to help but Michail Antonio remains the only out-and-out striker. The East End outfit have adapted well to the situation, taking 10 points from five games in February.
Lingard’s three goals have helped while Antonio has bagged 15 in the top flight. He was on target for the second consecutive match as West Ham went down 2-1 to table-topping Manchester City on Saturday.
And it seems inevitable that they will look to add another striker to the ranks in the off-season. Armstrong may well be the man they target.
He has been scoring goals for fun for the Ewood Park outfit this term. The Newcastle-born ace has 19 from 31 Championship games and 20 in all competitions.
Despite his prowess in front of goal, Rovers are not challenging for promotion. Tony Mowbray’s side sit 15th in the second-tier table and are 12 points adrift of a play-off place.
Therefore, they could cash in on a player who has ambitions to play at the highest level once again. He began his career with Newcastle United but left after finding opportunities hard to come by.
The man capped at all England youth levels enjoyed many loan spells while on the Magpies’ book. He played for Coventry City, Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers before signing for Rovers.
The talented striker has notched 55 goals from 155 appearances in all competitions. He is now showing his true colours and that might mean a few clubs join the race for his signature.
Rovers playing hardball
Blackburn Chief Executive Steve Waggott has already made it clear that Armstrong will not be sold on the cheap. The latest reports claim the north-west side want £25m for their talented forward.
It remains to be seen if West Ham are prepared to go that high for a Championship player. Rovers need to put a high price on their talisman as Newcastle will receive 40 per cent of the profit.
He will fall out of contract in the summer of 2022. That means buying clubs will hold all the aces if he remains with the former Premier League champions next term.
Moyes had hoped that a bid of £10m would be enough to get a deal over the line. But it seems as though that figure is not in the right ballpark for the diminutive striker, according to The Mail.
