Tottenham’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Everton on Wednesday night has increased speculation that Jose Mourinho could be facing the sack.
Spurs saw a major avenue towards ending their long wait for a trophy extinguished after losing 5-4 at Everton AET.
After the game, Mourinho turned the heat on Gareth Bale with the on-loan forward not even in the squad for the clash.
However, it is the Spurs boss who is most under pressure. Exit at Goodison Park leaves him with just two realistic trophy options – the Europa League and the Carabao Cup final.
Indeed, following their FA Cup elimination, Mourinho saw himself immediately installed as joint-favourite for the sack.
He is now the leading Premier League manager to lose his job alongside Sam Allardyce at West Brom. The pair are followed by Steve Bruce, Roy Hodgson and Scott Parker.
Tottenham’s exit at Goodison Park was largely thanks to a number of individual errors, with Hugo Lloris unable to keep out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg conceding a penalty.
And pundit Rio Ferdinand insists Mourinho’s plans to play expansive football are being killed by Tottenham’s mistakes.
“I have to say I actually feel sorry for him [Mourinho] in some ways,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“Because in recent weeks he’s changed quite a few times in the way they’ve approached games.
“The West Brom game was a bit different when Harry Kane wasn’t playing, and now tonight was open and expansive.
“But each and every one of those times recently they’ve been undone by individual moments, individual errors.
“As a manager, you can prepare all you like all week for each game. But these individual errors are killing him.
“In that sense I feel sorry for him. Sometimes it just derails his whole plan that he’s worked on all week.
“I think it’s a quality thing, yeah. I think there’s too many players consistently making mistakes and it’s leaving them open. They’re having to chase games some of the time.
“Until they get that right and eradicate those types of mistakes they can never really consider themselves a team that’s going to challenge consistently. Mistakes lead to goals, which then means you chase and leaves you open. It’s a consistent problem for Spurs.”

Poyet sends Levy Mourinho sack message
Gus Poyet has warned Daniel Levy not to consider sacking Mourinho before he’s had a chance at ending the club’s long trophy drought.
Tottenham tackle Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on April 25.
Victory at Wembley would be Tottenham’s first trophy since winning the League Cup in 2008.
And Poyet reckons it would be a mistake to end his reign before he gets a chance to win it.
“Talking about Jose, I think the main thing for Jose is he’s already in a cup final,” Poyet told Stadium Astro.
“I think nothing will happen before that final. I don’t want to think that he’s under pressure because they want trophies, they’re in a final, and there’s still plenty of the season ahead.
“So I think it’s a slightly different situation with Frank Lampard, the amount of money that Chelsea spent in the summer.
“But you don’t know what is going on internally, so to comment on that would be unfair to Jose.
“But definitely the cup final helps, because that’s what they’re looking for, trophies.”
