Brighton manager Graham Potter feels his players’ mature approach to adversity will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.
Things looked bleak for the Seagulls in the early part of the campaign. However, they have rallied to pull 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
With 11 points from their past five matches, there is now breathing space between themselves and 18th-placed Fulham. But Potter will not rest on his laurels and urge his men to fight for every point.
With survival in the league the main target, cup competitions are a welcome distraction. The Amex outfit were hoping for a decent run in the FA Cup.
But they crashed out at the fifth-round stage after a 1-0 loss to Leicester on Wednesday. It was a bitter blow but the manager is adamant his charges will bounce straight back.
They host Aston Villa on Sunday and Potter is confident of a response.
“I have got no doubts,” he told reporters. “Whether we can still beat Aston Villa is another thing, because we are playing against a top team – but it won’t be from a lack of character, a lack of personality.”
Kelechi Iheanacho scored a 94th-minute winner for Leicester earlier in the week. Potter admitted that his men were beside themselves.
But he believes his group of players have the ability to draw a line under the defeat and move on.
“Of course the boys were disappointed after the game, distraught after the game because they had put such a lot in and didn’t want to lose,” he added. “That’s absolutely fine but they are sensible enough and consistent enough in how they think to go, ‘Okay, we have got another match to prepare for and the world’s not going to end.
“It is what it is, what can we do? Handling setbacks is the key to elite sport. It was a setback for us, but the boys will be ready for the game against Villa.”
Key games approaching
Although most at the club will be confident of avoiding the drop, they will want to hit 40 points. Following the Villa clash, the south-coast outfit entertain Crystal Palace.
They then travel to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom. Sam Allardyce’s men are fighting for their lives.
Positive results for Brighton in those games means the Seagulls will not be.
