The fine details of how Liverpool beat Celtic to Ben Davies are revealed, while West Ham manager David Moyes eyes a Championship striker – both in the latest Paper Talk.
HOW LIVERPOOL GOT BEN DAVIES
Liverpool snapped up a deal for Ben Davies after noticing a blunder from Celtic in their negotiations with the defender, according to a report.
Former Preston centre-back Davies signed a long-term deal with the Premier League champions in the final days of the January transfer window.
However, Celtic had also shown serious interest in signing the 25-year-old. Indeed, Hoops boss Neil Lennon admitted that the Reds “gazumped” his side to a deal.
But while he did not reveal any more detail than that, the Sunday People, has claimed to reveal the full story.
Celtic had agreed personal terms with Davies on a pre-contract, which would have become active at the end of the player’s Preston contract in July.
However, they inserted a clause requiring Davies to be injury-free and fit upon completing his move.
Therefore, Davies became increasingly unsure, wary of that the fact that a serious injury would scupper the move – as well as interest from other parties.
As such, Liverpool swooped in and offered Preston up to £1.6million and a loan deal for Sepp van den Berg.
Preston boss Alex Neil said: “The Liverpool move came out of the blue. I think he was shocked.
“I just said, ‘Listen you’ve just got to make sure you get this across the line’. He’s earned his move and when he gets his opportunity he has to show everybody what he’s about.”
