Manchester United could offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new contract, but will not do so until the end of the season, according to reports.
Solskjaer has been in charge at United since December 2018, when he replaced Jose Mourinho on initially an interim basis. He has held the permanent role since March 2019.
Last season, he guided the club to three cup semi-finals, but lost them all. However, he did secure a top-four finish.
This time around, the target could be even higher. United were top of the table recently, but have lost ground since then.
Even so, despite a five-point gap to leaders Man City – who have a game in hand – United are still in the title race.
Solskjaer’s reign has had moments of turbulence, but with things looking up again, he may be set for a reward.
According to The Sun, Solskjaer could receive a new contract. His current deal expires in 16 months.
United could offer him new terms, which would see him earn a pay-rise as part of a two-year extension.
However, any offer will have to wait until the end of the season. There are still concerns about United’s inconsistencies under Solskjaer.
For example, they recently lost to basement side Sheffield United. The semi-final curse has also struck again in this season’s EFL Cup.
If Solskjaer can ensure a positive end to the season, though, then United may put their faith in him for the long-term.
Solskjaer outlines next step
The United boss will be hoping to move a step closer towards a first trophy when they take on West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round on Tuesday.
There is still a long way to go to the final in May, but the former striker has high hopes.
“Well, of course a trophy is always what you’re aiming for,” he told the club’s official website. “You want to win every single competition – FA Cup, Europa League, every game you play, the Premier League.
“And that’s the ultimate challenge and a test for a team: to go all the way.
“That’s not the be all and end all, of course it isn’t; it’s the bread and butter of the Premier League that is also a measure of how good a team is. To get to a final, sometimes you’re lucky with the draw, but to win a final, then all the good teams have been beaten.
“So that’s the next step for us in the development of this team: to go all the way in a competition.”
