The agent of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has confirmed that there are two English clubs in the hunt to sign his client.
The Frenchman has announced himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders in recent seasons.
As such, he has attracted attention for a while, with several clubs across the continent keen on a deal.
German champions Bayern Munich have proved mainstays in the hunt; Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed a meeting with the 22-year-old’s agent last weekend.
But speaking to Sport1, Volker Struth confirmed that a move to England cannot yet be ruled out for his client. Indeed, while Struth did not name names, Liverpool and Manchester United are supposedly keen on Upamecano.
The centre-back agreed a new contract last summer, but a release clause in the deal has left the door wide open for clubs to chase his signature.
Struth said: “The release clause was agreed because the player decided to want to take the next step at some point. It is very likely in the summer.
“Nothing final has been decided yet. The tendency for him to leave the club in the summer is high.
“The release clause is €42.5 million (£37.4million). That is an insane sum in coronavirus times. In summer 2019 it was something else.
“The proportions of the transfer fees have changed. I believe that some clubs have to say goodbye to the market values when they sell players.”
Bayern talking, but English move open
Speaking of Bayern’s interest, Struth added: “Hasan Salihamidzic is really trying and has found the right temperature in the talks. There is not too much pressure in there.
“Nevertheless, it was emphasised that they are very interested in him.
“[Apart from the Bundesliga] only the English league is in consideration. The Spanish clubs that were eligible are currently financially unable to do so.
“It’s no secret that there are two interested parties from the Premier League. A decision will be made and announced in the next few weeks.”
Liverpool have agreed a deal to bring in Preston’s Ben Davies as cover for their back line before Monday evening’s transfer cut-off.
However, there remains a belief that the Reds will look to sign a marquee long-term target in the summer.
