Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford deserves his place in the England squad and would offer Gareth Southgate “something different” at the European Championships this summer.
Bamford has silenced his doubters with a fine season in front of goal, scoring 12 times in the Premier League. That is level with Jamie Vardy and just one fewer than Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
That total would actually be two higher had Bamford not been robbed by two unfortunate VAR reviews this season. The latest, in Friday’s defeat at Wolves, drew a sarcastic response from the Leeds striker.
Nonetheless, his form this season has caught the eye. As such, Bamford is under consideration for an England call-up.
And that would be fully deserving, according to leading pundit Micah Richards.
“I’m taking Bamford, I have to play Bamford,” Richards told Sky Sports.
“I think he’s been exceptional, different, left-footed, can drop deep, score goals. He’s playing in a team that’s just come up, let’s not forget.”
Richards was asked if he’d take Bamford ahead of Ollie Watkins and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
“It’s difficult,” replied Richards. “I just think he offers something different; the way he plays, the way he makes runs.”

Bielsa planning Leeds transfer offensive
Leeds, meanwhile, have been given hope that Marcelo Bielsa will stay at the helm for a fourth season in charge.
United’s return to prominence in the Premier League this season has been masterminded by their enigmatic coach Bielsa.
The Argentine had been lauded for the impact he has made on a squad that largely resembles the one he took over in 2018.
Bielsa is a cult hero in West Yorkshire, though fans face an agonising wait each year waiting to learn if he will remain with the club.
This is due to the manager only signing one-year extensions towards the latter part of the campaign.
Now, according to a trusted source, Leeds’ summer transfer plans have given an indication that Bielsa is set to stay.
