Rio Ferdinand has warned Liverpool that fighting for the top four could yet prove too much of an ask, amid another damaging defeat.
Jurgen Klopp‘s men lost 3-1 to Leicester on Saturday, despite taking the lead in the second half.
Indeed, three moments of madness in the space of 10 minutes allowed the Foxes to take the lead. Thiago Alcantara’s foul – which went to VAR for a penalty check – proved costly anyway.
James Maddison struck, with the free-kick also passing a VAR check for offside. However, Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker then produced another mistake which allowed Jamie Vardy to net into an open goal.
Harvey Barnes rounded off the win, but Alisson and debutant Ozan Kabak had already done the damage with their mix-up in communication.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ferdinand warned Liverpool that their new target of staying in the top four may also prove a tough task, following their near-confirmed failure to retain the title.
“[It’s a] calamity. Confidence has been taken out of this team,” the pundit said.
“They go one goal up and last season you’d say game over. If you go away from the TV, you’ll probably come back and it’s three.
“But now you’re questioning it. You’re not confident in them now. There isn’t that authority anymore. Last season people were saying ‘this is one of the greatest teams to play in the Premier League’.
“They’ve got [RB] Leipzig coming up in the Champions League [on Tuesday] and they’ll want to stay in that competition and show what they can do. The changing-room has to stick together.”
Liverpool told of shocking new low
Ferdinand added: “The fact they concede and the team capitulates, that for me is a big concern.
“When that goal went in they became a soft touch. These are little details that cost you points. They’ve got big long-term injuries. They don’t look as potent as a group.
“I think they will struggle to finish (in the) top four.”
Robbie Savage then had his say, pointing out Liverpool’s place in the table on current form. The Reds’ latest defeat means that they have only won two of their past 10 Premier League games.
“Liverpool are under massive pressure now to get into the top four,” he said.
“Since the turn of the year, they’d be in the bottom six. Shocking defending.”
