Rio Ferdinand said that Dele Alli put potential suitors on alert with a statement performance in Tottenham’s Europa League win over Wolfsberger.
Alli netted an overhead kick before providing two assists as Spurs finished their last 32 opponents off on Thursday.
Indeed, the 24-year-old looked vibrant from the off and his bicycle kick came after only 11 minutes. From there, he set up Carlos Vinicius and later Gareth Bale as Spurs won 4-0 for an 8-1 aggregate scoreline.
Such a performance is one which Alli would want to put on in week in, week out. However, his lack of game time this season made his display all the more significant.
Amid his snubbing by boss Jose Mourinho, reports have suggested that Paris Saint-Germain tried to sign Alli in January. The French giants also supposedly retain an interest going into the summer.
Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport of Thursday’s performance: “He’s been waiting for that and Dele has put himself in the shop window.”
Peter Crouch, meanwhile, said: “What I saw from Dele today was magnificent. You can only beat what’s in front of you and I thought he was first-class and had a bit of a swagger back.
“He set-up two goals and scored an absolute worldie – you can’t ask for more really.
“I don’t know what’s going on this season but for him to have been left out of nine squads, not even making the bench.
“We know he’s got ability and tonight he’s proved that. These [Wolfsberger] aren’t great but he was magnificent.
“He was involved in everything good Spurs did.”
Mourinho revels in Alli performance
Alli’s outing was only his 17th of the season, with injury also affecting his minutes.
In fact, he has only played six times in the Premier League, all as a substitute.
Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Mourinho heaped praise on the midfielder.
