David Alaba is planning to change his position when he leaves Bayern Munich in the summer, a report claims.
Alaba has confirmed he will not be extending his contract with Bayern, meaning these are the final few months of his long spell with them.
The Austria international has enjoyed a trophy-laden career with the Bundesliga giants. Now, at the age of 28, he is seeking a new challenge.
The chance to sign someone of Alaba’s quality for free is an inviting opportunity for several of Europe’s biggest clubs. For example, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are keen to sign him.
But there is also a chance that Alaba could end up in the Premier League. He is admired by Chelsea and Liverpool in particular.
Both clubs are looking to strengthen their defences. Chelsea brought in Thiago Silva in the summer but need a consistent partner for him who can then become his successor.
As for Liverpool, injuries to key players prompted them to sign Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January. However, Alaba would offer a significant step up in class.
But if either of the Premier League clubs want to sign Alaba, they will be intrigued to learn his personal plans.
According to Le Parisien, Alaba wants to play as a midfielder at his next club, not a defender.
The Vienna-born star has mainly featured in defence throughout his career. He is capable of playing as a left-back or centre-back.
But he has also filled in as a defensive midfielder on occasion, and it is claimed that is the role he wishes to move into.
How that may affect Chelsea’s and Liverpool’s interest is unclear. Both seem reasonably well stocked in that department at present.
Alaba in contact with Rudiger
Chelsea’s potential plans to sign Alaba were recently boosted when current defender Antonio Rudiger admitted he had been in contact with the Austrian.
That contact was not necessarily about a transfer to Stamford Bridge. However, if talks were to become more serious, the German may be able to help.
“If Chelsea were to decide on one of the three players as a transfer target, I would be available to answer any questions,” Rudiger told Bild of links with Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Niklas Sule.
“I know Jerome and Niklas very well and I’ve already had contact with David Alaba.”
