Borussia Monchengladbach’s talanted forward Alassane Plea is the latest player linked with a January move to West Ham United.
The Hammers are on the lookout for a new striker after selling Ivory Coast hitman Sebastien Haller to Ajax for €22m. Haller left on January 8 and a host of names have been linked with the London Stadium.
There have been no firm bids but manager David Moyes confirmed he is in the market for new faces.
“We would like to strengthen if we can,” the Scot told Amazon Prime. “But the most important thing is that we win games. We win our games with the players we’ve got.
“If we think there’s players out there who can help the team perform better and win more often then I’m interested.”
Michail Antonio is now the Hammers’ main source of goals and he needs help up front. According to the Daily Mirror, Plea is the man they might turn to this month.
The 27-year-old has been with the German club since the summer of 2018. He has scored 32 goals from 82 appearances in all competitions.
Prior to arriving at Borussia-Park, the Frenchman found the net 44 times for Nice from 135 outings.
Capped once by France, he also creates goals and has four assists on his record this term. That is a decent return from just six Bundesliga starts.
The former Lyon ace can operate as a striker or play wide on the right. That kind of versatility is a bonus for any manager and makes him a decent option.
It is unknown whether Gladbach will let him leave midway through the campaign. They are just outside the European places and will want to maintain that push until the end of the season.
Losing a player of Plea’s ability would be a blow but money always talks in football.
Champions League an issue
Plea started five of Gladbach’s six Champions League games last year. They qualified for the knockout stage by finishing second behind Real Madrid in Group B.
A two-legged tie with Manchester City awaits, with the first match pencilled in for February 24. It seems likely that the man who scored five goals in the competition would like to carry on playing in Europe. He scored a hat-trick agaust Shakhtar Donetsk and twice again Inter.
That puts the Londoners at a disadvantage in the race to get him on board. His direct style of play and willingness to take on opposition defenders makes him a player that would excite the fans.
