Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne is the latest player linked with West Brom as Sam Allardyce tries to strengthen his squad in January.
The Baggies face a season-long relegation battle after a poor first four months of the campaign. The West Midlanders have garnered only eight points from 17 games and are six points from safety.
However they now have a man at the helm famed for his ability to pull off rescue acts. There are plenty of points left to play for and Allardyce will try to squeeze every ounce of talent out of his charges.
But the former England manager also wants to bolster his ranks this month. He admitted that club officials have tried and failed to sign players since the window opened.
“We have tried to acquire at least one or two new players this week but that hasn’t come to fruition,” he told Sky Sports. “There are still plenty of irons in the fire and we will continue until the end of the window to try and improve the squad for the back end of the season, with the fight that lies ahead of us.”
Diagne, 29, has enjoyed an excellent campaign with the Turkish outfit this season. The Senegal international has scored nine Super Lig goals from 14 outings and another two in all competitions.
It is said that Gala are open to a loan deal with an option to buy dependent on whether Albion manage to remain in the top flight.
After enjoying something of a nomadic existence since failing to make it at Juventus, Diagne has blossomed in Turkey. He scored 32 goals from 36 appearances while at Kasimpasa. He also played in the Champions League while on loan with Club Brugge last term.
Having rarely stayed anywhere for long during a 10-year professional career, he may be seen as a gamble. But the Hawthorns outfit need goals and he might just be the man to bring them.
Belfodil bid fails
Allardyce wanted to sign Ishak Belfodil from German club Hoffenheim. The Algeria international has started just six Bundesliga games this season and has yet to find the net.
It was thought that he might be on his way but Albion could not agree a loan deal. Another option is to recall Kenneth Zohore from his loan spell with Championship club Millwall.
He has struggled with injuries for the Lions and played just five times. It is clear that ‘Big Sam’ needs help and history suggests he will get at least one player in before the window shuts.
