Tuchel’s first Chelsea press conference capped off by quiz on eye-catching Spurs quip Thomas Tuchel capped off his first press conference as Chelsea manager by revisiting his previous comments about his knowledge of Tottenham. German Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge earlier this week, taking charge of his first game on Wednesday. What’s more, his first meeting with the press then came on Thursday and he faced questions on his former quotes about Spurs. Speaking in 2016 while managing Borussia Dortmund, he said ahead of a Europa League tie that he had an admiration for Chelsea’s London rivals as a child. However, his fondness of the club came from the name, aside from any other factor. Indeed, he admitted that he did not know they played in London. Pressed on whether Spurs are subsequently his favourite team in England, Tuchel said (via football.london) on Thursday: “You are digging deep. “I want to be very honest, we played a Europa league game with Tottenham and when I was young, there was no daily match live on the TV so what I could actually see was one or two minutes on TV and suddenly Tottenham Hotspur came along once every four weeks. “Their name sounded like a big adventure and an advantage on playing with my friends. “I didn’t even know it was a club from London and now I work for their big rivals.” Tuchel arrives at Chelsea with the club enjoying a much better recent history with silverware than Tottenham. However, Spurs have looked on an upward trajectory under Jose Mourinho of late. They are into the Carabao Cup final and currently sit above the Blues in the Premier League table. Indeed, the latter reason – with Chelsea currently eighth – formed part of their decision to part ways with Frank Lampard. Tuchel pressed on Chelsea manifesto Asked what the club have told him to aim for in his tenure at Stamford Bridge, the German manager said: “The club made it very clear, Chelsea is about results. “We always try to bring performance, develop players, improve players, increase their value as well as strong performances. In the end, I am very realistic, I am in a club whose DNA is to win. “I am here to challenge for every trophy we play for. This year it is the Champions League and FA Cup, for the Premier League it is not realistic.” Tuchel insisted that he is unlikely to make any new signings with what remains of the January transfer window. But reports have claimed that midfielder Billy Gilmour could seek a last-minute exit on loan.
