Reports in France suggest Newcastle United are hoping to make a deadline-day move to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye on loan.
Gueye, 31, moved to the Parc des Princes in 2019 after three years at Everton. He made 35 appearances for Aston Villa during the 2015-2016 campaign.
And the Toffees swooped after Villa suffered relegation at the end of that season.
The Senegal international was a regular for Everton and PSG paid £30m for his signature two years’ ago. But he has not enjoyed the same game time in Paris, making 19 starts last season and 16 in 2020-21.
L’Equipe are reporting that Newcastle have made contact over a possible loan signing. Gueye is said to be keen on a Premier League return but is not thrilled at moving to Tyneside.
Steve Bruce’s side had been on a dreadful run of results until they beat Everton on Saturday. They have little time to get a deal over the line as the window closes on Monday.
Gueye made his name playing for Ligue 1 side Lille. Famed for his defensive qualities in midfield, he enjoyed 176 outings in all competitions for Les Dogues.
Sport Witness are suggesting the two clubs have agreed on the move. But the player himself has yet to give it the green light.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley seems reluctant to sanction any big-money signings this month. It was reported at the start of January that only loan deals would be allowed.
Therefore a temporary move for Gueye would make sense and he will add some steel to the Magpies. They are 15th in the standings but eight points clear of the relegation zone after Saturday’s surprise victory.
Next up is a home clash with Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening.
High praise from Rooney
Gueye’s move from Everton to PSG took time as Manchester United were said to be keen. It was claimed at the time that Wayne Rooney had recommended the African to United.
The Derby manager had been impressed with the tough-tackling midfielder while they were both at Everton. That held up his move to the French capital and the Red Devils were thought to be interested again last summer.
He was linked with an exit in the summer of 2020, with Wolves also mentioned as possible suitors. However, the Dakar-born ace remained with the Parisians and continued to play his part in the first team.
