Chelsea have joined the race for in-demand Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan, according to reports in France.
The Blues were heavily active during the summer transfer window and could be busy again in January.
In the summer, they focused largely on attacking recruitments. However, their primary focus now seems to be adding to their defensive options.
One of the players they are considering a bid for is Simakan. According to Le10 Sport, Chelsea have contacted Strasbourg to inform them of their interest.
Simakan has already attracted interest from a number of clubs. AC Milan are believed to be leading the race, while recent reports have linked him with Everton and Wolves.
However, Chelsea could pose strong competition in the battle to sign him if they decide to make a formal offer.
The report claims Strasbourg could accept an offer of above €15m. They need to balance the books, but also do not want to let their prize asset leave on the cheap.
So far, the only offer on the table for Simakan is from Milan, who offered €12m plus €2m in bonuses in the summer and have kept that bid on the table.
Range of suitors for Simakan
The report adds that Nice are interested in keeping him in Ligue 1, but the player is yet to be convinced.
Therefore, there may be an opportunity for him to move abroad. The Premier League could be a potential destination.
Aston Villa have also been mentioned as a potential suitor recently, while he was a target for both West Ham and Southampton in the summer.
The 20-year-old has started all 17 league games for Strasbourg, who are hovering above the Ligue 1 relegation zone, so far this season. He is under contract there until 2023.
