Bayern Munich have reportedly entered the race to sign Real Madrid defender Eder Militao, but face competition from a few big clubs.
Militao, 22, moved to the Bernabeu from Porto in the summer of 2019. He had ambitions to become a club legend but has struggled to find a way into the first team.
The Brazil international made only 10 starts among 15 appearances in 2019-20. And, far from improving on those numbers, has enjoyed just two La Liga outings this term.
Coach Zinedine Zidane has preferred Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho in his rearguard. And it seems as though that is unlikely to change over the remainder of the campaign.
That could be a serious blow to the youngster’s hopes of playing in the summer’s Copa America and Olympic Games. Selecao manager Tite had kept faith with Militao, calling him up to face Venezuela in November.
However, he was left out of his nation’s latest round of World Cup qualifiers. A lack of action was cited as the reason and so he must start playing soon to get back in the reckoning.
There have been no official bids but the media is rife with reports on clubs that are keen. Tottenham, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund have all been linked.
Corriere dello Sport reported on Tuesday that Spurs chief Jose Mourinho had asked Daniel Levy for just one January signing – Militao.
It is unclear whether the north Londoners would try for a permanent transfer or loan deal. There could always be the option for a loan with view to purchasing next summer.
But the player’s stated aim to fight for his spot in Madrid might scupper those plans. However, he did not play any part in Real’s Super Cup loss to Athletic Bilbao.
Nacho replaced Varane at half time and, once again, the South American was overlooked. It seems as though an exit would be best for all parties concerned but it could be a complicated deal.
Alaba part of the equation
Bayern’s David Alaba looks set to leave the Bundesliga for Real when his contract expires in the summer. If Los Blancos can get a deal for the Austria international over the line they might entertain letting Militao leave.
Other clubs are keen on Alaba, however, with Liverpool said to have made contact with his agent. The Reds’ interest is thought to be no more than a polite enquiry, however.
Jurgen Klopp seems content to stick with what he has, despite a number of defensive injuries.
Therefore, Alaba’s future may be in Madrid, potentially having an impact on Militao.
There is plenty of work to be done for Militao to move on. And Real will want to recoup most of the €50m they forked out for him in 2019.
