Shkodran Mustafi’s agent has confirmed he is in Barcelona to discuss a shock transfer for the Arsenal man.
Mustafi played in Tuesday night’s 4-1 home defeat to Man City, but his chances in the Premier League have been few and far between.
In fact the 28-year-old has made only two appearances in the league this season and is out of contract next summer. That means that the German defender can speak to other clubs next month and move for free in the summer.
The defender’s agent Emre Ozturk posted a photo of himself preparing for a meeting with Barcelona on Instagram. He titled this post “ready for meeting” and he has confirmed to SPOX that he is there to discuss Mustafi.
SPOX journalist Fabian Zerche said (via Sport Witness): “I’m not in Barcelona because of Yusuf Demir, but because of Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal, whom we also represent.”
Mustafi could move next month, but Arsenal would be due a fee, but if Barca wait until June they will not have to pay a fee for the player.
Mustafi has played 150 times for Arsenal since joining from Valencia in 2016, but has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta.
Upon returning from injury, Mustafi has had to play second fiddle to Gabriel, Rob Holding and David Luiz.
The writing has been on the wall for Mustafi for several months.
“Well at the moment I was just happy to come back from injury, it was three long months – I was happy just to come back and be able to play again,” Mustafi replied when asked about a new contract in October.
“We haven’t been talking about anything so there isn’t anything I can tell you guys.”
Barcelona are looking for cover for Gerard Pique, who seriously injured his knee last month.
Arteta reflects on Runarsson mistake
Meanwhile, Arteta said that goalkeeper Alex Runarsson’s mistake led in part to making it “impossible” for his side to beat Manchester City.
The Gunners’ woes continued on Tuesday when City dumped them out of the Carabao Cup at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite equalising through Alexandre Lacazette in the first half, Runarsson’s error helped the visitors take the lead.
The Iceland goalkeeper looked to have saved Riyad Mahrez’s free kick but he could not keep hold of the ball. Indeed, from there, Pep Guardiola’s men netted two further goals to add gloss to their victory.
Speaking after the game, Arteta offered his support to his second-choice goalkeeper but admitted that his error played a part in his side’s defeat.
“A really hard one to take, considering how the game went, the reaction the team had against this level of opponent,” the manager said (via the Daily Mirror).
“Obviously when you give the goals away that we gave, you make the game impossible.”
