Manchester United have joined Liverpool in expressing their interest in highly-rated Schalke centre-back Oxzan Kabak, claims a report.
The Daily Mail say that United have added the Turkey defender to their target list as they look to strengthen their rearguard.
Kabak has been reported as a target for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool for some time.
Bundesliga journalist Chris Williams claims Liverpool contacted Schalke about Kabak in September. And Italian source Sport Media Set also report that Liverpool are keen on the centre-back.
AC Milan are also keen on the player, but Kabak is now being considered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United are looking for a long-term partner for Harry Maguire, with doubts over Victor Lindelof.
Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have struggled with injuries and Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones are likely to leave next month.
Kabak, 20, could fit the ball and the report says Schalke, who were looking for £40m, could now accept £25m for the seven-cap Turkey international.
Shaw: Write Utd off at your peril
Meanwhile, Luke Shaw believes United can challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title and says it would be “silly” to write off Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
United are just a point behind second-placed Leicester and just five adrift of champions Liverpool with a game in hand on each.
Solskjaer’s men hammered Leeds 6-2 on Sunday and face one of their most difficult matches so far against Leicester on Boxing Day.
United’s home form has been poor, but away from home they have a 100% record and Shaw says it would be foolish to write off their chances of becoming champions.
Speaking before the win over Leeds, Shaw told Sky Sports: “The way the Premier League is going at the moment, I think it would be silly to doubt us. I think at this moment in time, it’s anyone’s really.
“The team that takes charge, goes well over the Christmas period, and wins all their games, I think have got a very good chance.”
