Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says that the fact that Leeds dominated possession against Manchester United played into their hosts’ hands on Sunday.
United thrashed Leeds 6-2 at Old Trafford in the clubs’ first Premier League meeting in almost 17 years.
The Red Devils made a flying start and were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes. However, they took advantage of their opponents’ aggressive style of play, which allowed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s men to counter-attack.
Indeed, scoring on the break is United’s strength under Solskjaer, something Hasselbaink pointed out when analysing the match for Sky Sports.
As a result, the former Leeds star insisted that the result does not change anything as regards the pressure Solskjaer faces.
After Roy Keane said that United could finish as the “best of the rest”, Hasselbaink said: “‘Best of the rest’… no, I can’t see it. Today they were amazing, don’t get me wrong.
“But ‘amazing’ because they killed Leeds off on their mistakes and that’s what they do.
“Now, when a team doesn’t make that many mistakes – against Man City, 0-0 – they don’t create. Against Chelsea, they had one opportunity, they [didn’t] take. 0-0. So on, so on.
“If you’re going to be up there and be challenging, you need to be able to create more. For me, that is their problem – when they have more of the ball. Don’t forget: Leeds had 59% of the ball today. At Old Trafford.”
Keane noted that, despite United benefitting from the frantic manner of the game, the 6-2 scoreline is the determining factor for United.
Hasselbaink wants more Man Utd dominance
Hasselbaink disagreed, though, and said (via the Liverpool Echo): “True. Scoreline is very important. But when you want to challenge or be close to Liverpool, you have to be more dominant.
You have to oppose teams more. For me Man United don’t do that. They have got good players, don’t get me wrong.
“They totally annihilated Leeds today. But: Leeds mistakes. That for me is the difference.”
United return to action on Wednesday when they play Everton in a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie. But their focus then turns back to the Premier League and a crunch Boxing Day clash with Leicester.
