Manchester United star Scott McTominay wants his former boss Jose Mourinho to lose during his time in charge of Tottenham.
McTominay, 24, was given his chance in the Red Devils’ first team during Mourinho’s turbulent United reign. He responded well and put in some superb displays both domestically and in Europe.
The Portuguese tactician was a big fan of the Scotland international’s style and heaped praise on the youngster. After United lost to Barcelona last season, Mourinho felt McTominay was one ray of light.
“Scott McTominay in midfield he was like what I used to call – but when I use this expression it’s obviously in the total positive sense of the word. He was a mad dog,” he told RT.
“Afraid of nobody. Imposing his respect. Pressing really hard with a huge range of movement a huge area of pressing. Pressing higher and creating problems in Barcelona building up then really aggressive on the duels.”
The pair enjoyed a good relationship while Mourinho was at the helm but that was the exception to the rule. The boss managed to fall out with many players – Paul Pogba for one – and was sacked in December 2018.
He is now in charge of Tottenham and has guided the north Londoners into the top three of the Premier League.
Whether or not they can sustain a title challenge only time will tell. But he seems much happier than during his spell at the Theatre of Dreams.
Old habits die hard
McTominay has started seven games among 10 league appearances this term. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has continued to pick the Lancaster-born ace, who has also won 18 caps for Scotland.
He has noted Mourinho’s words over the months since his Old Trafford departure and admitted their mutual admiration.
“Me and Jose got on really well. I feel like that is common knowledge now and everyone knows that,” he told Stadium Astro.
“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about Jose Mourinho. He’s not my manager at the minute and obviously Ole is amazing as well, so they are two people I’ve got to thank a lot for.”
However, in the style of his previous boss, the tenacious schemer made it clear just where his loyalties lie.
“But he’s the manager of Tottenham, I want him to lose now,” he added. “That’s the way it is, it’s the dog eat dog world of football.”
