Man Utd add Brighton man wanted by Liverpool to three-man list to fix problem position Manchester United are monitoring Ben White and are reported to have added the Brighton defender to a three-man defensive wish-list for 2021. The 23-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign on loan with Leeds last season and it was no shock to see them try sign him permanently. Leeds went as high as £25m to bring White back, but the approach was rejected and they handed the player a new deal. That decision looks to have proved a shrewd choice. White has been a regular starter for Graham Potter this season. Statistically, he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League too. According to Wyscout’s index rating, White is currently the fourth best performing central defender in the Premier League. Only Kurt Zouma, Gabriel Magalhaes and Thiago Silva rate higher so far. White has been strongly linked with Liverpool on the back of that fine form. The Reds lost Virgil van Dijk to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. It’s a similar tail of woe with Joe Gomez; the defender also suffering a season-ending injury. As such, a report earlier this season claimed Liverpool were plotting a move for White when the January window opens. That apparent interest resulted in a claim that the Seagulls would do business with Liverpool if they paid an eye-watering £50million.   That link though has since been dismissed by a less-than-impressed Potter. However, Brighton now face a new threat to their efforts of keeping White in the shape of United. As per the Manchester Evening News, White has been added to a three-man defensive shortlist for 2021. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his central defensive options and could make his move in January for one of three targets. As per the report, Solskjaer and United are also keen on Dayot Upamecano and Raphael Varane. MEN Sport understands United are ‘huge admirers of White’ and it’s indicated he may now be their No 1 target. Their report states that Brighton are opposed to a January sale. However, it’s claimed they may be convincded to sell at the right price in January. United defensive duo set to leave United reportedly hope to offset some of the cost for White by offloading Phil Jones and Eric Bailly. According to reports this week, Steve Bruce has made contact with Michael Carrick to discuss a possible move for Jones. Jones is nearing the end of his long stay at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old has been with United since 2011, but has fallen down the pecking order in recent years. After making just two Premier League appearances last season, Jones was left out of the Red Devils’ squad for the season. Even though he still has a contract until 2023, it seems likely he will leave the club in 2021. Jones could even seek a move in January as he looks to reignite his career. There have been concerns there would not be any suitors for him that would be able to afford his wages. Meanwhile, our exclusive late last month claimed United are hoping that Villarreal could be tempted to take back former star Bailly in 2021.
