Liverpool have reportedly identified Lille star Sven Botman as a centre-back target, and could land the player for a bargain fee.
The Reds have been tipped to dip into the January transfer market after long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano was touted as a potential target, along with Schalke defender Ozan Kabak. But with both those deals unlikely, the Reds have seemingly switched targets to France.
The Anfield outfit are reportedly set to take advantage of Lille’s dire financial situation and stike a deal to sign Botman.
The Ligue 1 outfit have major issues off the pitch and are apparently ready to let go of some of their key players.
Foot Mercato, via the Daily Star, claims Liverpool have already been in contact with Botman’s representatives.
Botman only joined Lille over the summer, having made a name for himself at Ajax.
The fee for the 20-year-old was reportedly in the region of £7.2m, and it would appear that Lille are set to make a healthy profit.
The report adds that a deal could be agreed for £27million, meaning that he won’t exactly come cheap for the Reds.
However, Liverpool were reportedly willing to pay £45m before finding out about Lille’s financial situation.
To that end, they have slashed their offer by around £18m in the hope of sealing somewhat of a bargain.
Pundits urges Liverpool to rush through deals
Paul Robinson feels Liverpool should secure the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson as soon as possible.
The two stars have been instrumental in taking the Reds to the top of English football. Liverpool had come close but finally got over the line to win the Premier League in 2019-2020.
That was one season after they clinched the Champions League. Both players played a huge part in those successes and their importance to the Merseysiders cannot be overstated.
Fabrizio Romano revealed on last week’s ‘Here We Go’ podcast that Van Dijk is to be offered new terms. He looks set to be handed a new five-year deal at Anfield despite missing most of the season through injury.
The Netherlands international is under contract until the summer of 2023. Alisson penned a six-year deal when Liverpool paid Roma £66.8m for his signature in 2018.
There appears to be no urgency over the pair’s future but Robinson believes the club should act now.
“It is a no brainer,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs. “I would give Alisson and Virgil van Dijk as long a contract as they want.” Read more…
