Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shut down winger Mohamed Salah’s comments about the potential of leaving the club for a top move to Spain.
Salah admitted in a recent interview that he would not rule out a future transfer to the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona.
He also told AS that he felt “very disappointed” at Klopp for not handing him the captaincy against Midtjylland. Trent Alexander-Arnold took the armband in the Champions League dead rubber, with the Reds’ four captains all absent.
Klopp followed that snub up by benching Salah in Saturday’s record-breaking 7-0 win over Crystal Palace. However, the Egyptian did come on to score twice in the second half.
Asked in his post-match press conference about the call to start the winger as a substitute, Klopp insisted that Salah needed a rest.
“It was the first time in a while that we had the opportunity to do something like this. It was clear, we played Sunday and Wednesday so we needed fresh legs today,” he told reporters (via the Daily Mirror).
“So Joel [Matip] could come in, Naby [Keita] could come in and then we had to think about how we would deal with that in the first line.
“Mo played the last four games and missed only seven minutes from the last four games – a massively intense period. So it was clear it would be him.
“And then usually you would expect, with the recent results between us and Palace, that it would be close. So to bring him in in the last half an hour was a good idea. We did that, but it was not the scenario we would have expected.”
Pressed on Salah’s comments, Klopp began by laughing them off.
He then said: “There’s nothing to say from my side about that. All fine from my side.”
Klopp eases Mane strop concerns
Meanwhile, Klopp also had to ease concerns about Sadio Mane after Saturday’s romp at Selhurst Park.
The Senegal international ended his recent goal drought but then came off in the second half. Indeed, he was visibly frustrated at the decision.
However, Klopp insisted that the winger cooled off after the game.
