Thiago Silva has shed more light on his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain for Chelsea in the summer.

The Brazilian defender moved to Stamford Bridge as a free agent after eight years of service in Paris. However, that time ended in acrimonious circumstances.

As he approached the age of 36, PSG confirmed they would not be extending his contract – but his form in the delayed Champions League knockout stages made them think again.

Silva showed that his age was just a number, as he produced a number of imperious performances on their route to the final. Now, though, it is Chelsea who are enjoying what he has to offer.

Silva has already vented his frustration at PSG sporting director Leonardo – who in turn has admitted he made a mistake with the defender.

Now, the former PSG captain has spoken further about how he was disrespected by the club.

“At the beginning, there was no offer to renew my contract,” Silva told Canal Football Club (via Sport Witness).

“Leonardo called me, told me I wasn’t a part of the club’s project and said I could leave. After the Champions League final, he called me back and asked me if I’d signed with another club. I said no, but I’d given my word to Chelsea.

“For me, the word is the most important. Once you’ve said something, you have to follow through. You can’t change your mind like that. And, I think they changed their mind after the Champions league because I showed my quality.”

Silva felt judged on three games

Silva added: “What saddens me, it’s that I spent eight years there and I was judged on the last three games. Everything I’d done before didn’t matter.

“For me, it’s sad to make a decision like that, but it’s football. That’s how it is. Now I have to look forward and to keep working for Chelsea. It’s a club that deserves it.”

Silva’s experience already seems to be benefitting Chelsea, who were on a 17-game unbeaten run until they lost to Everton at the weekend.

Silva has started eight Premier League games, and has also scored one goal in the English top flight. There has even been talk that Chelsea could quickly extend his short-term deal, showing the kind of faith that PSG did not.
