Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he rejected an approach from Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson about taking over at Old Trafford in 2013.
Current Everton boss Ancelotti has begun to stamp his mark on the club with several top signings. Indeed, the Toffees have had a solid campaign so far, winning their last three Premier League games.
However, they are being guided by a manager who has had an illustrious career in the sport. In fact, Ancelotti is one of only three managers to have won the Champions League three times.
AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid are among the clubs on his CV.
However, the Italian has revealed that he could have made the switch to the Red Devils in 2013. As Ferguson left, though, Ancelotti had all-but agreed his deal with Madrid.
Recalling the approach from Ferguson, he said: “You want to know from me?!”
“I can say that I still keep a fantastic relationship with Sir Alex, and we met when he decided to [retire].
“But I was close to Real Madrid, and so I appreciate the fact that at that time he talked to me. And that’s it, no other opportunity [to manage United].”
Ferguson ended up appointing David Moyes as his successor on a six-year contract. However, his fellow Scotsman failed to last a full season.
Since then, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have taken the Old Trafford hot seat but could not enjoy huge success.
What’s more, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is two years into his tenure and is yet to win a trophy.
Ancelotti hails respect for United
However, Solskjaer’s record could change this season, with the Red Devils still in the Carabao Cup.
They face Everton in the quarter-finals on Wednesday and Ancelotti has said that he still has great respect for his opponents.
“Yes of course Manchester United is a fantastic club, a fantastic team I battled against them a lot of times when Sir Alex was there, when I was at Chelsea,” he said.
“I have a lot of respect for this team, for this club, it is a historical club in the world of football like Milan, like Real Madrid, a lot of respect.”
United beat Everton 3-1 in Premier League action when the two sides met last month.
