Bayern Munich are well covered when David Alaba leaves after their sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic all-but guaranteed the Liverpool target will depart.

Reports last week claimed the Reds were exploring the possibility of bringing Alaba to Anfield in January.

Jurgen Klopp is on the lookout for more defensive cover in the wake of Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending ACL injury.

And while Alaba might not be the natural centre-back Klopp desperately needs, he is seemingly in his thinking.

Liverpool’s interest prompted a strongly-worded warning to the player from Bayern coach Hansi Flick.

However, it seems Flick’s wish to retain Alaba’s services may be taken out of his hands. That’s after president Herbert Hainer confirmed Bayern’s U-turn over a new contract offer to the Austrian.

Alaba’s departure from the Allianz Arena has now been all-but confirmed by Salihamidzic. He has lifted the lid on the factors that have seen Alaba and Bayern fail to come an agreement.

He is also adamant that they have enough quality to cover for the Austrian were he to leave in January.

“I can tell you what happened. We negotiated and made David an offer. He refused it. Ten days ago we sat down again and submitted another offer – with a deadline,” Salihamidzic told Sky Deutsche.

“We informed David and his agent that we would withdraw the offer when the deadline expired. We did that. I spoke to his agent again on Saturday and tried to talk to David again on Sunday because I wanted to know what was going on, but not much happened.

Bayern though did have to equalise twice before a late flurry saw them overwhelm RB Salzburg 6-2.

Asked about Alaba’s future after the game, coach Hansi Flick was more focused on Bayern and their next match.

“It is important to me that we have calm in the team and in our environment,” he said.

“We have a very, very important game against [Borussia] Dortmund on Saturday. I’m not interested in anything else. I won’t say anything more about it. I didn’t see Hasan’s interview, so I don’t want to comment on it.”

Alaba has also been linked with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.
