Liverpool will reportedly receive £2million in compensation from FIFA after Joe Gomez’s injury while on international duty.
Having already lost Virgil van Dijk for the season, the Reds were hit by a further blow when Gomez went down in England training.
The centre-back suffered a serious tendon injury in his left knee and will be lucky to return this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are also missing converted centre-back Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold, although those problems are less serious.
The only senior centre-back on their books is now Joel Matip, but he has had his own injury issues in the past.
That will likely mean Klopp having to lean heavily on youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips until January.
The winter window will surely bring about a new addition, with several names linked with an Anfield switch. Those names include a surprise swoop for a Tottenham star.
But the Merseyside outfit will at least get a pay out for Gomez’s injury woes.
The report in the Daily Mail claims FIFA have told The FA they will cover Gomez’s £80,000-a-week wages whilst he is out, meaning Liverpool will receive around £2m.
England internationals are part of the FIFA club protection programme. That means that injuries sustained on international duty are protected with compensation.
Gomez breaks silence on serious injury
Joe Gomez has broken his silence to send Liverpool and their supporters a positive message following the knee surgery that is likely to end his season.
“The road to recovery has already begun,” Gomez wrote on Twitter. “I’ve been here before, I know what it takes and I’ll be back better and stronger than ever.

“I’m obviously gutted, but this is a part of God’s plan and I believe everything happens for a reason.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their well wishes and messages of support.
“I’m focussed on my recovery and supporting my team mates in every way I can. See you soon.”
