But while the method often works, Wright has suggested that it also causes confusion for goalkeepers. Fernandes had to retake his first effort against West Brom on Saturday because Sam Johnstone stepped off his line. However, former Arsenal striker Wright feels that goalkeepers have it “difficult” in the face of the uncertainty posed by penalty takers. “It is [difficult for goalkeepers],” Wright told Match of the Day (via the Manchester Evening News). “And then you’ve got forwards jumping up, doing this, doing that sort of stuff and the goalie can’t move his foot off. “They should stop people jumping and that, they should have to make a full… just run at the ball and hit it. If they can move and the goalies can’t, that’s not fair.” Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker then asked: “Are you going to have a law that says you can’t jump?” Wright said: “Yeah, you have to go straight through your penalty run-up, no jumping.” Fernandes arrived at United with a spectacular record from the penalty spot. But while he continued that run in the first few months of his Old Trafford career, the 26-year-old has missed two this season. As well as the one against the Baggies, he had a spot-kick saved by Newcastle’s Karl Darlow in October. Nevertheless, Fernandes has continued to be his club’s catalyst in attack.
