Poyet warns Cavani critics are in for shock as Man Utd man gains fitness Gus Poyet has warned critics of his fellow Uruguayan Edinson Cavani that the Manchester United striker will prove them wrong as the season progresses. United signed Cavani on deadline day in the recent transfer window, leading to questions about the club’s strategy. Indeed, the 33-year-old became a free agent in June and so questions arose as to why the Red Devils waited until the final stages of the window to make their move. Cavani’s prior lack of a club – and pre-season – therefore meant he arrived at Old Trafford without fitness. He has so far made five substitute appearances, scoring in his most recent outing. That goal came late on in the recent 3-1 win over Everton, a game from which Poyet believes there are danger signs about the heights Cavani can reach in a red shirt. “I think he is going to be more important for Manchester United than people think,” the 53-year-old told the Daily Mail. “Look at the last game at Everton. The result was in the balance, he came off the bench, one chance and bang. “English football is perfect for Uruguayans because we are passionate. Once we sign a contract, we forget about it because the only thing that matters next is winning. English fans love that.”   Poyet also picked out Cavani’s penchant for making dangerous runs as a trait that will see him benefit under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “He makes an incredible amount of runs,” Poyet added. “Maybe he makes an unbelievable run and the ball isn’t played. “The fitter he gets, the more he understands United’s play, the more he will play.” Despite his substitute appearances, Cavani is yet to start for the Red Devils.   Subscribe for free to TEAMtalk’s daily newsletter…   Fernandes reveals ‘unbelievable’ Carrick shock Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes has revealed a training-ground shock from former United midfielder Michael Carrick. Gus Poyet has warned critics of his fellow Uruguayan Edinson Cavani that the Manchester United striker will prove them wrong as the season progresses.

English fans love that.”

Poyet also picked out Cavani’s penchant for making dangerous runs as a trait that will see him benefit under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“He makes an incredible amount of runs,” Poyet added. “Maybe he makes an unbelievable run and the ball isn’t played.

“The fitter he gets, the more he understands United’s play, the more he will play.”

Despite his substitute appearances, Cavani is yet to start for the Red Devils.
