Paper Talk: Imposing Ajax centre-back emerges as top Liverpool target; Arsenal, Chelsea bid for Juventus star Liverpool are preparing a January bid for an imposing Ajax centre-back, while Arsenal and Chelsea have made their moves for a Juventus star, according to Sunday’s transfer gossip.   AJAX ACE EMERGES AS LIVERPOOL TARGET Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Ajax centre-back Perr Schuurs following his recent outstanding Champions League display against them. Schuurs has already been on trial at Anfield as a 17-year-old, and although he did well it was felt it was better to leave him in Holland with Fortuna Sittard and continue to monitor his progress. The imposing 6ft 3in stopper, whose composure and authority has been likened to Reds talisman Virgil van Dijk, went on to captain Fortuna Sittard as a teenager before joining Ajax. And following the departure of Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus, Schuurs has earned himself a regular place in Erik ten Hag’s side. The 20-year-old has also been called up by Holland, although he is yet to make his senior international debut. He could, ironically, be given that honour in the next round of fixtures due to Van Dijk’s long-term injury. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was said to have been hugely impressed with Schuurs’ display as Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win in Amsterdam. And now the Sunday Mirror claims that an offer could be forthcoming in the January transfer window.   They will also be able to take another close look at Schuurs when he and Ajax come to Anfield in the return Champions League group game on December 1. Schuurs is another name added to a long list of Liverpool defensive targets, following Van Dijk’s ACL injury. That is despite Klopp admitting that is happy with the options he still has at the club, with youngster Nat Phillips impressing alongside Joe Gomez in Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham.
